2017-2018 Scholarships

*NEW* Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarship

At least two (2) Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarships are available for the 2017-2018 school year. Each scholarship is $2,500.

To be eligible for the Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Attend a trade or vocational school accredited through the “Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) (http://www.accsc.org/Directory/index.aspx) during the 2017/2018 school year
  2. Have a focus of study that will lead to a viable career; preference will be given to students with a medical or nursing focus.
  3. Be either an active member of the Marines’ Memorial, a child or grandchild of a member, OR must be a student Veteran

Required To Apply for the Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarship:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. A copy of your most recent high school or trade school transcript.
  3. 2 References must submit letters of recommendation by the deadline of April 21, 2017. (Letters of Reference Instructions HERE.)
  4. Upload your 250-500 word Original Essay on the following topic:
    • What is the best advice you have ever received? Who gave you the advice, and in what context? Did you follow it?
*NEW* Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship

At least one (1) Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship is available for the 2017-2018 school year. Scholarship is $5,000.

To be eligible for the Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Be female
  2. Meet one of the following:
    • Be an active duty service member or a reservist in the US Armed Forces
    • Have separated honorably from US Armed Forces since 2013
    • Have recently transitioned from US Active Duty to Medical Service Corps
  3. Have a Bachelor of Science or equivalent in a medical subject area that is an accepted precursor to the study of medicine
  4. Applicants must attend an advanced Medical program with the goal of becoming a nurse, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, or medical doctor (MD or OD) from an accredited American College or University for the 2017-2018 school year
  5. Membership with the Marines’ Memorial is not required to apply for this scholarship

Required To Apply for the Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Your most recent undergraduate or post-graduate transcript
  3. 3 References must submit letters of recommendation by the deadline of April 21, 2017. (Letters of Reference Instructions HERE.)
  4. Upload your 250-500 word Original Essay on the following topic:
    • What is your personal philosophy for treating patients?  How did you come to build this philosophy, and does it affect your interaction with other medical professionals?

Hammer Family Scholarship

At least four (4) Hammer Family Scholarships are available for the 2017-2018 school year. Scholarships are $5,000.

To be eligible for the Hammer Family Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Must be United States Veterans who have served since 2004
  2. Must plan to attend a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math undergraduate university/college program during the 2017/2018 school year.
  3. Marines’ Memorial membership is not required

Required To Apply for the Hammer Family Scholarship:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. For entering freshmen, upload a copy of your High School transcript and a copy of your SAT or ACT scores.
  3. For returning University/College students, upload a copy of your current University/College transcript.
  4. Please attach your DD-214.
  5. 3 References must submit letters of recommendation by the deadline of April 21, 2017. (Letters of Reference Instructions HERE.)
  6. Upload your 250-500 word Original Essay on the following topic:
    • In your opinion, what invention of the past 20 years has had the most negative impact on our world?  Why?  Explain its impact today and how it may impact future generations
Cold War Veterans Scholarship

Two (2) Cold War Veterans Scholarships are available for the 2017-2018 school year. Each scholarship is $2,500.

To be eligible for the Cold War Veterans Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Plan to attend a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) undergraduate university/college program.
  2. Be either a member of the Marines’ Memorial, or a child or grandchild of a member

Required To Apply for the Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Your most recent undergraduate or post-graduate transcript

Edmund K. Gross Education Scholarship

One (1) Gross Education Scholarship is available for the 2017-2018 school years. This scholarship is $2,500.

To be eligible for the Gross Education Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Be education majors at an accredited undergraduate university/college during the 2017/2018 school year.
  2. Be either a member of the Marines’ Memorial, or a child or grandchild of a member

To Apply for the Gross Education Scholarship:

Colonel Richard Hallock Scholarship

Two Hallock Scholarships are available for the 2017-2018 school year. Each scholarship is $2,500

To be eligible for the Col Hallock Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Applicants must be attending an accredited undergraduate program for the 2017-2018 school year
  2. Must be either a member of the Marines’ Memorial, or a child or grandchild of a member
  3. No restrictions on majors/courses of study

Required To Apply for the Hallock Scholarship:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. For entering Freshmen, upload a copy of your High School transcript and a copy of your SAT or ACT scores.
  3. For returning University/College students, upload a copy of your current University/College transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in the Marines’ Memorial Scholarship Program!  Below are the most frequently asked questions about the program and application process.  

Due to the high volume of calls and emails about the Scholarship Program, we recommend you read the questions below before contacting the Marines’ Memorial staff.    

A: No, each student may only apply for one scholarship type per year.  The online application program will not allow for more than one application per person. 

A: The student must be the one to fill out the application.  If an application is found to have been filled out by someone who is not the student, the applicant will be disqualified. 

A: For the 2017-2018 school year, we have one scholarship type available to post-graduate students.  This is the Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship.  Applicants for the Schonher Scholarship must:
– Be female
– Meet one of the following:
    – Be an active duty service member or a reservist in the US Armed Forces
    – Have separated honorably from US Armed Forces since 2013

A: For the 2017-2018 school year, we have one scholarship type available to trade or vocational school students, the Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarship.

A: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors or returning college students.  Juniors are not eligible, but we look forward to your application when you are a senior! 

A: Letters of recommendation must be submitted online directly from your recommender.  Here is the “how-to”: RECOMMENDATION REQUESTS

A: Absolutely!  Scholarship monies are meant to cover tuition and other educational expenses.  Please note that scholarship checks are payable to the awardees’ schools.  If you have questions about if a scholarship will interfere with your Post-911 tuition assistance, please contact your college’s admissions department or Student Veteran Center. 

A: The online application must be submitted by April 21, 2017 at 5pm Pacific. If you complete the application, but do not hit the submit button, the application can not be considered

-If you are a student Veteran (post 9/11), but not an MMA member, you may apply for the Hammer Family Scholarship (Engineering and science majors only), the Tribute Scholarship (no restriction on major), the Wesley Hammon Leach Scholarship (Trade School students), or the Nancy M. Schonher Scholarship (female medical field post-grad students). 
-If you are a student Veteran and an active Marines’ Memorial Member, you are eligible for all scholarships (where you fit the other criteria). 
-If you are a child or grandchild of a Veteran, that Veteran MUST be an active Marines’ Memorial member for you to apply for a scholarship.  Membership applications can be found online here: MMA Membership Application
